Comment from the Caveman on the routes:
“Much passion, planning and building has gone into creating a fun and safe event for sports loving adventurists of all ages.
You’ll notice the distances are the shorter than usual and more in line with ITU Cross Tri distances. Don’t let this fool you into thinking you’ll be home for Tea Time.
The reasons for the shorter distances are:
1) We’re more about having fun than testing your endurance.
2) The courses are pretty much all single track with some fun man made and natural obstacles thrown in. No added fire road to make up the miles.
3) We start at 9am, allowing people to travel from far & wide without having to get up at crazy hour.
1000m Swim – 2 x laps of 500m
1000m consisting of 2 laps of 500m with an exit and 50m run between laps. The 2 lap swim is great for spectators, safety, and those without webbed toes and it gives you a few chances to wade a bit… For your safety and comfort, (and those trying to swim in bib shorts) wetsuits will be legal regardless of temperature.
“This is a real mountain bikers extravaganza! If I had my way, the course would be 100% single track, but in reality we do need some jeep track, especially early in the race, to allow for overtaking, taking a sip from your bottle and taking in the views. 70% single track, 30% jeep track.
The aim of the course design is to ride the best trails Grabouw has to offer, and to make it achievable to all, keeping in mind that there will be relatively inexperienced riders as well as a World Champion or 2. Or 3. (South Africa has a lot of them)
We paid special attention to the famed Rock Garden, making it ride-able for most mountain bikers, but if you’re not up to it, there is the jeep track chicken run, which will take you slightly longer than the Rock Garden would.
To make the event spectator and press friendly, we’ve designed the bike course to come through race village twice with a 13km loop and a 8km loop. Watch out for man made features as you go through Race Village. Those with skill will be handsomely rewarded.
This is Africa after all, (no place for sissies) so you do need to have a properly functional mountain bike with which you hopefully have an intimate relationship, which includes a good number of hours in the saddle. Grabouw has a lot of rocks, loose gravel, a short section of deep sand and 15km of winding single track. Everything is very ride-able for the average rider. Where needed there is a Chicken Run for the faint at heart. There’s no “do or die” drop offs, jumps or steep bridges. Remember, “Speed is your friend”, but “When in doubt, clip out.” (And walk safely with 2 feet – not the one leg over the bike hop hop some people consider “the safe option”)
The course profile and .GPX tracks are available here, so you’re welcome to download onto your device and pre-ride as much as you want, the course will be marked a week before the event and there will be “Ride with the Caveman” course recce on Feb 8 and 15, and depending on interest Feb 1.”
8km Trail Run
“I’m told to say its 8km, and even though its shorter, its going to feel like 8km.
Boring open road running you find between Durban and ‘Maritzburg and other big cities. Here at Caveman’s Cross Tri Challenge you’re going to run seriously varying terrain, of which 95% is single track, 2% is Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) and 1% is a “Swamble…” Please leave your non waterproof devices at home…
It is a relatively flat run with less than 70m of climbing- this is not an extreme fitness test, we’re here to have fun. Feel free to choose any line you want on the wide expanse of the lunar landscape Beach Run – pre-running the course will come in handy for those whosinnittowinnit. Your loved ones will enjoy watching you get dirty or wet or fall or scramble or all of the aforementioned…
As you can see, there’s Caveman sprinkled all over this event, its not going to be what you’re used to…”

2km Trail Run
Each participant is responsible to know the race course. There will be volunteers and markings, but a little knowledge beforehand will go a long way. A course map is available on the Scuttle website. Printed maps will be available at the venue at registration.
If water conditions do not allow for the swim portion of the race to be conducted, the race will be held as a Duathlon
Minimum race age for this event (Sprint and Full) is 14 years old. Athletes younger than 14 should enter the Junior Race.
Ignorance of the rules is not admitted as an excuse for violations.
It is the racer’s responsibility to maintain adequate hydration. The organizers will provide hydration stations on the bike and run.
Here are more specific rules as per ITU (International Triathlon Union):
General Swim Rules:
a.) Athletes may use any stroke to propel themselves through the water. They may also tread water or float. Athletes are allowed to push off the ground at the beginning and the end of every swim lap.
b.) Athletes must follow the prescribed swim course.
c.) Athletes may stand on the bottom or rest by holding an inanimate object, such as a buoy or stationary boat.
d.) In an emergency, an athlete should raise an arm overhead and call for assistance. Once official assistance is rendered, the athlete must retire from the competition.
General Bike Rules:
a.) An athlete is not permitted to:
(i) Block other athletes;
(ii) Cycle with a bare torso;
(iii) Make forward progress without being in possession of the bike.
b.) Dangerous behaviour
(i) Athletes must obey the specific traffic regulations for the event, unless a Technical Official (marshal) advises otherwise.
(ii) Athletes leaving the field of play for safety reasons have to return to it without gaining any advantage. If advantage is gained due to this action, the athlete will receive a time penalty to be served in Transition Area for Age Groupers and at the run penalty box for everyone else.
General Run Rules:
a.) The athletes will:
(i) Run or walk;
(ii) Wear the bib number;
(iii) Not crawl;
(iv) Not run with a bare torso;
(v) Not run without shoes or run barefoot on any part of the course;
(vi) Not run with a bike helmet on;
(vii) Not use posts, trees or other fixed elements to assist manouvering curves;
(viii) Not be accompanied by team members, team managers or other pacemakers on the course.
General transition rules:
a.) All athletes must have their helmet securely fastened from the time they remove their bike from the rack at the start of the bike leg, until after they have placed their bike on the rack at the finish of the bike leg;
b.) Athletes must use only their designated bike rack and must rack their bike;
c.) Only equipment to be used during the competition can be left in transition. All other belongings and equipment are to be removed before race start.
d.) Bike shoes, glasses, helmet, and other bike equipment can be placed on the bike.
e.) Athletes must not impede the progress of other athletes in the Transition Area;
f.) Athletes must not interfere with another athlete’s equipment in the Transition Area;
g.) Cycling is not permitted inside the Transition Area: Athletes must mount their bicycles after the mount line by having one complete foot contact with the ground after the mount line. Athletes must dismount their bicycles before the dismount line by having one complete foot contact with the ground before the dismount line. While in the transition area (before the mount line and after the dismount line) the bike can be pushed only by the athlete’s hands. Mount and dismount lines are part of the transition area.
h.) Nudity or indecent exposure is forbidden;
i.) Athetes can not stop in the flow zones of the Transition Area;
j.) Marking positions in the Transition Area is not allowed. Marks will be removed and the athletes will not be notified.
Swim Caps: Bright coloured swim caps are compulsory to be worn by all athletes during the entire duration of the swim.
Wetsuits: are allowed
Helmets in transition: You must have your helmet on and buckled when you are in possession of your bike. It must be on your head before you take your bike from the rack until racked again after the bike section.
Bike Numbers: Bike numbers must be mounted on the handlebars facing forward.
Run Numbers: Numbers must be worn on the front of the body.
Cutting the course: Short-cutting and/or cutting trail switchbacks or course is not permitted and may result in disqualification.
